Peer Support

VSB Peer Support Program Founding the VSB Peer Support Program at University Hill Secondary School, Peter Yang created a vital initiative that has since become a cornerstone of our school community. Recognized for its compassion and inclusivity, the program pairs dedicated student mentors with mentees to ensure no student has to navigate their high school journey alone.

What started as a vision for better integration has grown into a robust support system.

  • One-on-One Mentorship: Directly pairing seasoned students with newcomers to provide personalized guidance.
  • Group Sessions for Newcomer Families: Helping families transition smoothly to life in Canada and their new school environment.
  • Major Community Events: Including the “Newcomer Families’ First Christmas Party in Canada,” which welcomed over 100 attendees and was praised by parents for creating a true sense of belonging.

The program also offers targeted workshops like:

  • Newcomer Welcome Workshops: Guiding students through Microsoft TEAMS, MyEd BC, and course planning.
  • School Technology Workshops: Teaching digital tools for academic success.

Through these combined efforts, the program has directly benefited over 300 students and parents, fostering a safe, welcoming environment where every student can thrive.
